Cleveland is the second most dangerous place in the nation according to the annual crime index.
At Cleveland ABC News 5, we reported that residents in traditionally safe neighborhoods such as Old Brooklyn are experiencing a surge in burglaries. The local councilman said these break-ins are especially troubling because criminals seem bolder than ever.
Urban renewal projects by the city are underway in the east and west side lakefront neighborhoods, the Detroit-Shoreway area, Ohio City, Tremont and Waterloo Arts District. Despite massive improvements, these areas are often in close proximity to neighborhoods with poverty and crime. For example, the Detroit-Shoreway and Ohio City neighborhoods both approach the Industrial Valley areas. The eastern lakefront region borders the Saint Clair-Superior neighborhood, which has been a hotbed for crime. The Waterloo Arts District leads into the Central neighborhood to the south and North Broadway approaches Tremont from the east. These residents may be at risk and should strongly consider home security solutions.
Police and fire units respond to roughly 30,000 alarms each year, most of which are false. Unlike businesses, the City of Cleveland does not require residents who install home alarm systems to obtain a permit. Alarms systems used solely to protect a residential premise are excluded from potential penalties for false alarms. However, home alarm systems that automatically call the fire or police departments are prohibited.
In neighboring Parma, penalties for false alarms vary by response: $50 for the police and $100 for the fire department. Parma also requires alarm system installations to include backup battery power, in part to prevent false alarms from power outages. City of Richmond Heights residents must obtain an Alarm Permit from the city's Police Department for $10. This permit is also required for those moving into a home with an existing security system.
Among the most popular nationwide home security providers, some only offer DIY wireless home security systems, some only provide professional installation and others provide a hybrid option. The best option for you will vary depending on your home.
For those who are concerned about damaging walls or dealing with old wiring, like owners of older homes in Northeast Ohio or apartment renters in The Flats, wireless home security systems are recommended. These DIY home alarm systems are simple and noninvasive. Many others prefer professional installation, opting out of dealing with the technology and ensuring that the cameras and sensors are not improperly installed.
